Yahoo! Drops Support for Meta Keywords

What are meta keywords? Basically, they are a website meta tag that shows the keywords of a page.

Meta keywords can often lead unsuspecting users to spam sites because there isn’t anything stopping webmasters from using fake keywords to draw users to their site. Slowly over time, search engines have been taking meta keywords less and less into account when ranking search results.

Yahoo!, which uses keywords as a primary factor for search results, has just announced that they have removed meta keywords from the algorithm of ranking search results. At SMX East this week, Cris Pierry, the Senior Director of Yahoo! Search, had surprised everyone by announcing that Yahoo! had dropped support for the meta keywords several months ago, however it was unannounced.

Google had never supported the meta keywords tag, as confirmed by Matt Cutts. Keywords have absolutely no affect on Google’s rankings. Bing doesn’t support the keywords tag either.

It’s time to say farewell to the meta keyword tag.
