Celebrating 15 Years of Windows 95 and the Taskbar

Windows 95 LogoOn August 24, 1995, Windows 95 was born. Windows 95 was a huge commercial success and was considered one of greatest events in Bill Gates’ life.

Windows 95 was a major upgrade from its predecessors. It featured a brand new interface style with the Windows Taskbar and Start Menu we all know today. It also moved to a 32-bit subsystem from the previous 16-bit.

The following is one of the commercials for Windows 95.

The new taskbar was a major milestone in Microsoft Windows. It significantly enhanced the ability for computers to multi-task. This same concept of the taskbar is still in use today.

The taskbar surely evolved over the years, but even today with Windows 7, still carries the overall look.

I remember when I got my 1st professional job at a huge Fortune 500 company in 2002 and they were still using Windows 95, and thinking Uggghhhh!!! However pre-Windows 98 it was revolutionary as far as becoming a mainstream OS, and I think the Marketing campaigns helped with that a lot.

I forgot too that I always pay homage to Windows 95 with my Avatar! It is a picture of the falling cards from Solitare on Windows 95. I like it so much, because find me 1 person that back then didn’t think that was the collest thing!

    Nice commercial.
I used to have Windows 95, 98 and XP all in one computer.
Just found that it was too stupid as it takes up lots of space and most programs cannot run in 95 or 98. Lol.

Most programs crash easily and yeah..though there is a task manager, it doesn’t stop unless a Blue Screen of Death appears =D

I still have my huge desktop tower with Windows 95 somewhere in the garage. It has a 1 GB hard drive and I have no idea how much RAM it has.

It worked quite nicely and was definitely an improvement over Windows 3.1.
