How to Split Your Firefox Content Area into Multiple Tabs

Have you ever found an interesting website that you want to keep track of while you browse for other things on the web? Or perhaps you want to always see your online calendar without having to open another app? How about comparing multiple websites?

If you’re running Firefox, a popular add-on called Fox Splitter (formerly Split Browser) can help with that, but at the time of writing unfortunately, it is not compatible with Firefox 4.0 (does not work properly if force installed). However, a less popular but similar add-on exists, and it’s called Tile Tabs.

After you install the add-on, you will notice several new options added to Firefox’s general right click context menu. You can also add a Tile Tabs button to the toolbars by right clicking the toolbar and selecting Customize.

There are options to tile an existing or new tab onto the current one or duplicate a tab and then tile it, or just tile all the tabs. If you right click on a link, you can also choose to open the link in a tile.

When a tab is split, you will notice a blue box around the favicon. You can still switch between tabs as usual and the address bar corresponds to the currently selected tab.

    This add-on is pretty cool; except for when it crashes Firefox…

    Every so often, when I open / close a new tab, Firefox crashes (was a bit confused at first, since it was the first time I’ve seen the Firefox crashed dialogue box in a long time).

    It’s probably a conflict with one of my add-ons; now to see if I can find out which one…

    Anyone else experiencing this?

      So far, I haven’t experienced any crashes. Do you have any add-ons that deal with interactions with tabs or add-ons that relate to tabs in general? If it is a conflicting add-on, I would suspect that something that deals with tabbed browsing would be the culprit.

    Wow, this is a great plugin that I never heard of before.

    Now I just wish there was a way to do this with your different programs/screens. Say I need a Excel document on the left side of my screen and Firefox on the right side. There’s got to be some way to do that.

      Hello.

      If you’re running Windows 7, you got Aero Snap. Just drag each window to the sides of the window and they automatically resize.

      You can also right click on the taskbar and select ‘Show Windows Stacked’ or ‘Show Windows Side by Side’. Not as flexible as a plugin for Firefox but still works.

        Yeah, I like the Show Windows Side by Side, but I wish I could choose which windows.

        I’ve been playing with Autohotkey to see if I can make a macro to do it. But not doing well.

        I should just buy another LCD monitor and run dual screen.

    I couldn’t figure a way to split the tab without reloading the page (there use to be such a functionality in Maxthon browser). I most often use splitting to watch a movie on YT in background while I continue browsing other stuff. Splitting a YT clip causes it reset, so this basically means that this plugin is next to useless for me.
