This is a review of the top announcements from today’s keynote.

Hangouts

Google previously had a rather fragmented messaging offering. There was Google+, which had group video chats and text chats, and Google/Gmail Chat, which focused on text chat, but had basic video/voice functionality. These two services worked in similar ways, but were completely separate.

The new Google Hangouts plans to change that by unifying the two communication platforms. This explains the odd changes recently made to chat history.

Maps

Maps is receiving a major makeover, with a focus on providing a customized experience. The map is interactive and helps you discover related and interesting places. For example, landmarks that you visit more often (such as restaurants that you leave 5 star reviews for) will appear more prominently.

The new Maps is currently in beta preview and is invite-only. You can request an invite by going here.

Photos

Google+ Photos has been updated with new features like Auto Highlight (automatically determine which photos are the best and put them front and center), 15 GB free storage for full size photos (unlimited storage for standard resolution), and Auto Enhance (automatic enhancements to photos).

Google Play Music All Access Streaming

Google Play Music is introducing a new all-access unlimited streaming radio service, competing directly with services like Pandora and Spotify. The new service also lets users listen to any song or album on Google Play.

Google Music Radio

A 30-day trial is available, but afterwards it will cost $9.99 a month, or $7.99 a month if you sign up before June 30.

Google Play Games

Similar to features of Apple’s Game Center and Microsoft’s Xbox Live, Google Play Games includes features like cloud save (save game on one device, resume on another), leaderboards, achievements, and multiplayer gaming.

Google Play Games

Google also announced exciting new features for developers, including Android Studio, an IDE forked from IntelliJ made specifically for Android app development, and a pilot test program for new apps.

A pure-Android Nexus-edition of the Samsung Galaxy S4 will also be available on June 26 for $649 unlocked from the Google Play Store.

What was your favorite announcement from day 1 of Google I/O 2013?

Preview of Windows 8.1 “Blue” Available June 26http://www.techairlines.com/windows-8-1-preview-june-26/ http://www.techairlines.com/windows-8-1-preview-june-26/#comments Wed, 15 May 2013 00:34:13 +0000 Brian Yang http://www.techairlines.com/?p=8274 Windows 8Have you upgraded to Windows 8 yet? Launched last October, Windows 8 was a major shift for the popular Windows OS. The most notable change was the removal of the traditional Start Menu in favor of a full screen, touch-optimized start screen. While Windows 8 received some praise, mostly for its greatly improved performance, it also received its fair share of criticism.

Microsoft is hoping to change that and just confirmed rumors of Windows Blue, which will now simply be called Windows 8.1. The company didn’t reveal much about it except that a public preview will be available on June 26 and that it will be a free update for Windows 8 and Windows RT.

Microsoft Surface

While not officially confirmed by Microsoft yet, Windows 8.1 is expected to feature the return of the Start button (but not necessarily the Start menu), a boot-to-desktop option, additional Modern UI apps (like a calculator and a file manager), improved multi-tasking, and a split screen Snap mode.

What do you think of Windows 8? If you haven’t upgraded yet, what are your reasons for not doing so? What features are you hoping for with Windows 8.1? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.

Gmail Tests New Chat History Interfacehttp://www.techairlines.com/new-gmail-chat-history/ http://www.techairlines.com/new-gmail-chat-history/#comments Fri, 10 May 2013 05:32:59 +0000 Brian Yang http://www.techairlines.com/?p=8258 Do you use Google Chat? Whether you use chat from within Gmail or connect via a third party client, chat logs are stored within Gmail. These logs are stored just like regular email conversations and allow you to easily refer to conversations you’ve had with your friends.

Gmail has begun testing a new interface for viewing chat history. Previously, chats were listed in the format Chat with Name (# lines) and the conversations themselves were stored just like an email. You could even reply to them by sending an email reply.

Gmail Chat Log Viewer

The new Gmail chat logs no longer display the line count. The last one still uses the old interface.

New conversations are now viewed with a different interface and are no longer treated as emails. Gone are the traditional email buttons, like Archive, Delete, and Labels. Also gone is the line count. Instead, there are now buttons to Delete messages history and Resume chat. Timestamps are displayed only when the mouse cursor hovers over a message.

Similar to Facebook, your entire chat history (since the update) will be loaded.  Scrolling to the top of the chat will continue to load more chats with the same user. Unlike Facebook however, the chat history viewer has a listing for every conversation session (like before), even though it ends up loading the entire history regardless of which one you select.

New Gmail Chat Log

The new chat logs

Unfortunately, there is no way to delete a single message or conversation session. It’s delete all or nothing. Clicking the Delete messages history button will trigger a warning dialog asking the user to confirm the action. Deleted messages skip the trash. Because your entire chat history is shown together, this will delete your entire history with this contact.

Gmail Chat Delete

Deleted chat logs now skip the trash

For whatever reason, chats now appear in your Sent Mail folder and Gmail removed the option to disable chat history.

On the mobile Gmail app (Android), each line of the conversation is stored as a different reply in the conversation thread. The reply count for that thread is the line count.

Gmail Chat Lines

The Gmail app on Android displays each line as a different threaded reply.

The new interface has not yet been rolled out to all users and only applies to new conversations. Any old conversations you’ve had are left unchanged.

Are you seeing the new interface yet? What do you think of it? Do you prefer the old one?

Hide Watched Videos, Disable Autoplay, and More with YouTweakhttp://www.techairlines.com/youtube-hide-watched-chrome/ http://www.techairlines.com/youtube-hide-watched-chrome/#comments Sat, 04 May 2013 22:33:31 +0000 Brian Yang http://www.techairlines.com/?p=8243 Want YouTube videos to automatically play in HD? Don’t like autoplay? Is your subscriptions feed getting too cluttered? YouTube’s site accepts a limited number of parameters, such as playing a video in 720p HD, but if you want to take it one step further, the Chrome extension YouTweak for YouTube can help.

The settings page lets you enable or disable the extension’s features.

YouTweak Settings

Enable or disable features of the extension

YouTube labels which videos you already watched, but it does not automatically hide them. YouTweak can allow you to manually remove them or automatically do so.

YouTube Watched

YouTube Remove Watched

Remove all watched videos from the feed

The extension adds a button next to each video in the feed to manually remove videos.

YouTube Remove Video

YouTweak also allows you to disable videos from autoplaying, while still allowing them to buffer.

Unlike the hd parameter, which only works for 720p HD, YouTweak allows you to set the default quality for videos.

What do you think of YouTweak for YouTube? Have another extension to suggest? Share with us in the comments.

Useful YouTube Player Parametershttp://www.techairlines.com/youtube-parameters/ http://www.techairlines.com/youtube-parameters/#comments Wed, 24 Apr 2013 07:00:46 +0000 Brian Yang http://www.techairlines.com/?p=8145 YouTubeNeed to share a YouTube video with someone but have them start at a specific point rather than the beginning? Want to force the HD quality version to play on your website?

YouTube URLs accept various parameters to change the video player’s behavior. Parameters can be added to both regular video URLs as well as the embed code.

This is an update/rewrite of my popular Useful YouTube URL Tricks article, which was published in August 2010.

This article will be continually updated to reflect YouTube’s ongoing changes. If you find a parameter that I missed or find one that no longer works, please inform me by leaving a comment. Last updated on April 24, 2013.

What are Parameters?

URL parameters (or a URL query string) are extra pieces of data that are passed to a dynamic website, such as YouTue. A YouTube URL that looks like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zr4JwPb99qU&list=UUK8sQmJBp8GCxrOtXWBpyEA&index=1 has the following parameters:

NameValueExplanation
vZr4JwPb99qUVideo ID
listUUK8sQmJBp8GCxrOtXWBpyEAPlaylist ID
index1List index number

Newer embed codes are frames to a special embed URL. An embed code snippet that looks like this:

<iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Zr4JwPb99qU?rel=0&vq=hd720" height="315" width="560" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0"></iframe>

is a frame to http://www.youtube.com/embed/Zr4JwPb99qU?rel=0&vq=hd720 and has the following parameters:

NameValueExplanation
rel0Hides related video
vqhd720Automatically plays 720p HD version if available

Parameters are added after a question mark and separated with ampersands (&). It is up the website to decide what to do with each parameter. Some parameters do absolutely nothing and are there simply for statistics.

Website URL Parameters

These are parameters added to regular website URLs. There will usually already be at least one parameter (the video ID).

Play HD Video

By default, YouTube automatically plays whichever quality level is best suited to your internet connection. However, if you want to force it to play HD, add the hd parameter. This parameter will force the 720p HD version to play, regardless of the quality of your connection.

If 720p is not available, then this parameter does nothing. There is no parameter to force 1080p or any other quality levels.

NameValueExplanation
hd1Play 720p HD version if available

View the hd parameter in action

By default, YouTube videos play from the beginning. The t parameter lets you specify a time in this format: (#)m(#)s. For example, to start the video at 1:19, you would use t=1m19s.

NameValueExplanation
t[#]m[#]sSkip to a specific time in the video. Replace # with the desired number of minutes and seconds.

View the t (time) parameter in action

View Playlist of Channel’s Uploaded Videos

YouTube’s previous design had an easy way to view a playlist of all of of the uploader’s videos simply by clicking a button next to their name. However, this has been removed in the latest design. Fortunately, this playlist still exists under the list parameter with the value of UL.

NameValueExplanation
listULPlay video with a playlist of all videos the channel has uploaded

View a video with a playlist of all uploaded videos by that channel

Embed URL Parameters

The current version of video embed codes is simply a frame to a special full size video player. This player can be viewed like any other webpage or can be embedded into another page. If the uploader has disabled embedding, none of these will work.

This article only covers the newest frame embed method, which can load either a normal Flash player (ActionScript 3) or the HTML5 player. My original article covers some parameters that are exclusive to the older Flash object embed method and the older player, both of which still work but are not recommend.

Click the parameter name in the tables to view an example of it being used, along with example code.

Autoplay Video

Regular video URLs automatically play. However, by default, the embed URL does not autoplay. To force it to autoplay, use the autoplay parameter and set it to 1.

NameValueExplanation
autoplay1Autoplay the video.
autoplay0(Default) Click to play

Loop Video

Embed video URLs, like regular URLs, will not autoplay. However, this can be changed with the parameter loop set to 1.

This parameter has limited support in the newest player and requires the list parameter be present as well. To loop a single video, set list equal to the video ID.

NameValueExplanation
loop1Loop the video or playlist (requires the playlist parameter)
loop0(Default) No looping
playlist[Video ID]Combined with the loop parameter, loops a single video

If you want to loop videos on the regular website, you can use one of the numerous browser extensions and third party websites available.

High Quality Video

By default, YouTube will select the video quality that’s best suited to your internet connection. However, the vq parameter can force a specific quality.

NameValueExplanation
vqsmallPlay at 240p by default
vqmediumPlay at 360p by default
vqlargePlay at 480p by default
vqhd720Play at 720p by default

Of course, if the specified quality level does not exist, this parameter does nothing. There is no parameter for 1080p.

Show Captions

By default, YouTube will use the user’s selected closed captioning option. However, the parameter cc_load_policy set to 1 will override this.

NameValueExplanation
cc_load_policy1Show captions by default

Disable Related Videos

When a video is complete, the player displays links to related videos. The parameter rel set to 0 disables this.

NameValueExplanation
rel0Disables links to related videos
rel1(Default) Enables links to related videos

Start From Specific Point

Start the video from a specific point with the start parameter set to an integer number of seconds (measured from 0:00).

NameValueExplanation
start[integer]Time in seconds (from 0:00) to start the video from

End at Specific Point

Stop the video at a specific point with the end parameter set to an integer number of seconds (measured from 0:00).

NameValueExplanation
end[integer]Time in seconds (from 0:00) to end the video at

Autohide Controls

By default, the video progress bar fades away after the video begins playing. The autohide parameter can change this behavior.

NameValueExplanation
autohide0Progress bar and controls are always visible.
autohide1Progress bar and controls slide away a few seconds after the video beings playing.
autohide2(Default) Progress bar fades out while the controls remain visible

Hide Controls and Flash Loading

By default, Flash loads immediately when the page loads and video controls are visible. The controls parameter chan change this behavior.

NameValueExplanation
controls0Controls are hidden and Flash loads immediately when the player loads.
controls1(Default) Controls are visible and Flash loads immediately when the player loads.
controls2Controls are visible and Flash only loads when the video starts playing.

Disable Fullscreen

The parameter fs set to 0 hides the fullscreen button. This does not work with the HTML5 player.

NameValueExplanation
fs0Hides the fullscreen button (Flash player only)
fs1(Default) Fullscreen button is visible.

Show or Hide Annotations

The iv_load_policy parameter lets you specify whether or not annotations should be shown by default.

NameValueExplanation
iv_load_policy1(Default) Annotations are shown by default.
iv_load_policy3Annotations are not shown by default

Disable Keyboard Controls

By default, the player supports the following keyboard controls:

  • Spacebar – pause
  • Arrow Left: Jump back 10% in the current video
  • Arrow Right: Jump ahead 10% in the current video
  • Arrow Up: Volume up
  • Arrow Down: Volume Down

The parameter disablekb set to 1 disables keyboard controls. This does not work with the HTML5 player.

NameValueExplanation
disablekb1Disables keyboard controls (Flash player only)
disablekb0(Default) Enables keyboard controls.

Hide YouTube Logo

By default, a YouTube logo and link appears in the video control bar. The parameter modestbranding set to 1 hides this. A link to YouTube still appears in the title bar.

Hide Title Bar

When the mouse cursor hovers over the player or the video is paused, a title bar appears at the top, containing the video title, uploader name, and a link back to YouTube. The parameter showinfo set to 0 hides this.

NameValueExplanation
showinfo0Hide the title bar
showinfo1(Default) Show the title bar

Play List of Videos

The parameter playlist accepts a comma separated list of video IDs which will play in order as a playlist. The first video to play is the video ID specified in the URL (after embed).

NameValueExplanation
playlist[Video ID, Video ID, ...]Play videos in the order listed

Play a Saved List of Videos

The parameter list and listType can play search results, a user’s uploaded videos, or a saved playlist. No video ID is required.

NameValueExplanation
list[Varied]Play the specified list of content.Requires listType.

Playlist ID must be prepended with PL.

listTypeplaylistlist is a playlist ID, prepended with PL
listTypesearchlist is a search query
listTypeuser_uploadslist is a username

Use Light Theme

The default player is dark. Set the theme parameter to light for a lighter-white theme.

NameValueExplanation
themelightUse a light/white video player theme
themedark(Default) Use a dark/black video player theme

Use White Progress Bar

The default progress bar is red. Set the color parameter to white to have it white instead.

Setting this to white prevents modestbranding from working.

NameValueExplanation
colorwhiteUse a white progress bar
colorred(Default) Use a red progress bar

As an extra bonus, here’s an example with a light theme, a white progress bar, the title bar hidden, and autoplay.

Did I Miss a Parameter?

YouTube is constantly making changes. I will continue to update this article (as well as the URL generator) to reflect these changes.

Did I miss a parameter? Is a listed parameter no longer working (make sure its not simply a conflict with another)? Tell me about it by leaving a comment.

What It Would Take To Bring Me Back to BlackBerryhttp://www.techairlines.com/back-to-blackberry/ http://www.techairlines.com/back-to-blackberry/#comments Tue, 16 Apr 2013 06:20:14 +0000 Joe Pawlikowski http://www.techairlines.com/?p=8195 BlackBerryWhen you run a BlackBerry blog, switching away from BlackBerry is a weighty decision. Yet that’s exactly what happened this fall. A few elements fell into place around the same time, and it seemed like an opportunity to leave a platform I’d mostly stopped using in the last year — even with the prospect of BlackBerry 10 phones just around the corner.

It certainly did hurt to make a relatively long-term switch without giving BlackBerry 10 a real chance. After all, for more than a year I spent significant time at BBGeeks.com speculating about how BlackBerry 10 would fare in the marketplace. Now I was going to leave without realizing the payoff? Again, the decision was not made lightly.

After a year of using both a BlackBerry 9930 and an iPhone 4, I ditched both and went with the Samsung Galaxy S3. After five months with the device, and after seeing what BlackBerry 10 has to offer, I have to say that it was the right decision. But that doesn’t mean it will continue to the be the right decision a year from now.

There are certain things that BlackBerry 10 can improve on that would bring me back to the platform. It is understandable that they did not have many of these elements at launch — they had to focus on certain elements while sacrificing others. They also need to build up a stronger user base. But in a year’s time they could be in a better position, and perhaps can woo me back with a few upgrades. Here are a few that could play to their benefit.

1. Conspicuously absent apps

Contrary to popular belief, the issue with BlackBerry apps is not that they have too few. It’s that they’re missing some of those that truly enhance a smartphone experience. And unfortunately, BlackBerry 10 does not yet have some of the apps I use most often:

  • Netflix, perhaps the most conspicuously absent
  • Starbucks
  • Spotify
  • Amazon Instant Video
  • Instagram
  • Words with Friends
  • Hotel Tonight

This is just a personal list, too. There are many that others use — including nearly every streaming video app — that are absent from this list. In some instances, BlackBerry users have reported porting Android apps. But oftentimes the apps just don’t provide the same seamless experience they do on Android.

BlackBerry World

BlackBerry has a great selection of apps available, but its missing a few critical ones.

While BlackBerry has done a good job of wooing developers and creating a large library of apps, it still doesn’t have some of those that I use on my smartphone every day. It’s tough to justify switching in that case. A wider user base, though, could prompt these companies to develop for BlackBerry 10.

2. Better Google integration

The reason I switched to Android mostly centered on my usage of Google services. As a Gmail users whose main IM client is Google Talk, who uploads files to Google Drive, who will use Google Reader until the day they shut it down, who keeps dates on Google Calendar, and who keeps his entire music library uploaded to Google Music, switching to a Google device made all the sense in the world. But that doesn’t mean another platform can’t win me over.

Surprisingly enough, iOS does a decent job of this. Its Gmail app is superior to native integration — just as I imagine it’d be for BlackBerry. At this point, unfortunately, there are few Google app options for BlackBerry 10. The more of those they get, the less attached to Android I become. I imagine that’s the same for many current Android users. As you’ll see in No. 5, though, this could change even without direct Google involvement.

3. Customizable home screen

BlackBerry 10 HomescreenWhen BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins took a jab at iOS, it seemed like a poor attempt to garner attention. Despite any shortcomings in Apple’s iOS, it is still far, far preferred to anything BlackBerry has released. It is clear that Heins was simply noting the new interface that BlackBerry 10 brings to the table. But even then, they could have done better.

From all that I gather, the home screen panes — in itself a good idea — basically tackle your most recently opened apps. The ability to create a custom tile-based homescreen might be a better idea. Better still is integrating tiles with app icons, in the same manner that Android handles widgets.

The overall point: don’t force users to adopt a certain interface. There is a reason that HTC’s Sense UI doesn’t receive gold marks among its Android competitors. It forces too much on them. BlackBerry 10 will be better off for users with greater home screen customization. They’re certainly on the right track, though, so smoother integration is hopeful for the future.

4. More device variety

The Galaxy S3 works so well for user like me, who read a lot and watch plenty of video. The larger screen enhances those experiences greatly, making the bulky size worth the trade-off. All around the cellular world, manufacturers are creating larger and larger devices. You’ll see these 5-inch screens on devices not just from Samsung, but also from LG and ZTE. They certainly represent the latest consumer craze.

When you look at your preferred carrier for BlackBerry 10 phones you’ll see that lone model, the BlackBerry Z10. It’s not a small phone by any measure, but it still doesn’t push the limits of smartphone size, like the S3 or the Galaxy Note 2. Given BlackBerry’s history of device variety, though, there’s a decent chance we will see larger models — phablets, if you will — in the future. Knowing that one could come down the road especially discourages me, and many others, from buying now.

5. Wider use of HTML5

HTML5There is no doubt that HTML5 will affect our total web experience in a few years. Still in its infancy, HTML5 offers many options that weren’t available in previous HTML releases. The biggest advantage is the ability to create app-like experiences in mobile browsers. We’re already starting to see this — by most accounts the Facebook experience is better through BlackBerry’s web browser than it is through the app.

As HTML 5 usage grows, BlackBerry could benefit. They’re wired for HTML5 development, so as it gets better they can integrate services that don’t have apps available. Thankfully, this will be a natural progression. The wider use of HTML5 will benefit BlackBerry in the long run.

While each of these issues holds me back from switching to BlackBerry 10 any time soon, there is an upshot: each of these factors is correctable in the future. Gaining a critical mass of users will encourage more app development, taking care of No. 2 and 3. Natural progression could take care of Nos. 4 and 5. Licensing agreements, which could come along with a large audience, would knock out No. 1. All of this is within BlackBerry’s grasp.

Again, the decision to switch away from BlackBerry was not taken lightly. But after running BBGeeks.com for nearly five years, we decided to take a different direction with the site. Now that we cover all mobile platforms on MobileMoo, my device repertoire just got larger. Yet BlackBerry is still my original smartphone. It is my sincere hope that a year from now I’m pleading with my boss to get me another line, with a BlackBerry 10 device.

The Best of April Fools 2013http://www.techairlines.com/april-fools-2013/ http://www.techairlines.com/april-fools-2013/#comments Mon, 01 Apr 2013 21:45:49 +0000 Brian Yang http://www.techairlines.com/?p=8072 It is April 1st, a day when you truly can’t believe everything you see or read on the internet. As usual, many companies like to create all sorts of shenanigans on this very special day. Here is a compilation of some of this year’s best April Fools pranks around the internet.

Google Maps – Treasure Mode

Google leads the way by starting their April Fools shenanigans a day early. On March 31, Google announced that their Street View Team found a treasure map belonging to the infamous pirate, William “Captain” Kidd. They digitally scanned the entire map and released it as a new Treasure Mode for Google Maps. Google is asking users around the globe to work together to decipher the map and find the hidden treasure.

Google Maps Treasure

What’s with this giant chicken wing in the lower Manhattan?

Can you find all the clues to reveal the hidden treasure? Like last year’s Google Maps for NES, this one actually works.

Street View Treasure Mode

Look for treasure through Street View

YouTube was Actually a Contest

Over 70 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute. What if YouTube was actually a video contest this whole time? YouTube announced on March 31 that on April 1, the submission period of the contest will be over and the decade long judging process will begin. In the year 2023, the site will relaunch, revealing the video crowned as the Best Video Ever Uploaded, and nothing else.

A live show on April 1st announced the nominees. It is 12 hours long (and another 12 hours daily for the next 2 years!) and features nothing but two people reading off the names and descriptions of thousands of videos and showing occasional clips. The fact that they actually made this makes this (along with the Treasure Map above) one of the most elaborate pranks Google has ever done.

Help Conserve Energy by Opting to Remove Lettershttp://www.techairlines.com/remove-letters-save-energy/ http://www.techairlines.com/remove-letters-save-energy/#comments Mon, 01 Apr 2013 04:00:37 +0000 Brian Yang http://www.techairlines.com/?p=8081 Yesterday, Twitter announced two tiers of service: the free Twttr, which does not allow vowels, and the premium Twitter, which functions normally. We, at TechAirlines, see this as an effort to generate more revenue. However, we also figured that this was a genius idea, not for making money, but for saving energy instead.

Every page request takes energy to transmit. The larger the page, the more energy it takes to transmit it over the internet and render it in your browser. Makes sense right?

Every English word contains at least one vowel. So what if we took out all the vowels? It would make the size of each page significantly smaller. And a smaller page, means less energy is needed to transmit and load that page.

TechAirlines Energy Chart

A typical webpage would use 20% less energy if all of its vowels were removed.

However, we know forcing everyone to remove vowels like Twitter will cause a lot of angry emails because it will indeed make some articles more difficult to read. Also, why should there be removal of vowels only?

TechAirlines Energy Opt-in

Opt-in button can now be found below

In light of this, we are now allowing users to opt-in to our new energy-saving mode, which removes some letters, be it vowels or consonants, from all our posts (while still being able to maintain its readability) by clicking the button in the box below.  You may opt-out at any time.

Using the energy saving mode we provide you with allows a little bit of energy to be saved, both from your own computer and from our server. And as you know, a little bit of energy saved adds up quickly.

But that’s not all. There are still more perks to using the energy saving mode! Did you know that our energy saving mode can help you train your eyes to decipher gibberish messages from your peers due to missing letters or even typos?

Try it out and let us know what you think! Let’s all save energy, one letter at a time.

We thank you in advance for joining our motion to conserve energy.

Help Save Energy!

Help save energy by opting in to your energy saving mode. In this mode, some letters will be removed from our posts.

After opting in, please refresh the page. As of April 3, 2013, energy mode will only be in effect on this post. By the way, Happy April Fools 2013.

EaseUS FileManager is a Windows 8 & RT File Explorerhttp://www.techairlines.com/easeus-filemanager/ http://www.techairlines.com/easeus-filemanager/#comments Sat, 23 Mar 2013 00:25:27 +0000 Brian Yang http://www.techairlines.com/?p=8052 Did you upgrade to Windows 8 or purchase a Windows RT tablet? Microsoft is heavily promoting its new touch friendly interface (Metro, Modern UI, Windows 8 UI), but for some reason, decided not to make a file explorer and instead relies on the “legacy” Desktop mode for browsing files. Windows Explorer is great, but even on RT, its clearly designed for a mouse, not your finger.

Need an easy touch-friendly way to browse your files? We’ve covered a file manager called Files&Folders in the past. EaseUS FileManager is another free Modern UI file explorer from the Windows Store.

The home screen features links to common folders (Pictures, Music, and Video), your favorites, and recent places.

Tapping and holding (or right clicking) any file or folder brings up the app bar at the bottom. You can also pin your favorite files and folders directly to the Windows Start Screen.

Unlike Files&Folders, EaseUS FileManager only features a built-in viewer for images. All other media and files will open in their respective  default applications. There is a slideshow feature available for images.

What do you think of EaseUS FileManager? Do you think Microsoft should have just made their own file manager? Have another app to suggest? Share with us in the comments.

How to Open a Private Tab in Firefox 20+http://www.techairlines.com/firefox-private-tab/ http://www.techairlines.com/firefox-private-tab/#comments Tue, 12 Mar 2013 23:11:27 +0000 Brian Yang http://www.techairlines.com/?p=8050 Are you a Firefox user? Like other browsers, Firefox provides a Private Browsing mode, which until Firefox 20, forced you to save and close your normal browsing session.

Firefox 20.0 fixed this by adding Private Browsing windows, similar to Chrome’s Incognito Mode. However, what if you wanted to take this one step further and open private tabs alongside normal tabs in the same window (feature found in Opera)?

Firefox Private Windows

New Private Windows in Firefox 20

The extension Private Tab does exactly that.  It adds an extra menu option, New Private Tab, and keyboard shortcut, Ctrl+Alt+P.

Firefox Private Tab Menu

When you are in a private tab, the Firefox menu button turns Purple. In addition, the titles of all private tabs are underlined with dots.

Private Tab requires Firefox 20 or higher and does not require a browser restart.
