Google Acquires Photo Editor Picnik

PicnikGoogle has just acquired the popular Picnik online image and photo editor. It was officially announced on the Picnik blog and the Google Photos Blog.

Picnik was founded in 2005 and is headquartered in Seattle. It soon became a popular free alternative to desktop editors such as Adobe Photoshop, with millions of visitors per month.

Picnik is integrated into many online photo services such as Flickr. Picnik will continue to be fully operational and I suspect that Google will integrate Picnik into their own line of Google Apps products and possible integrate it with Picasa Web Albums.

In addition, there is a good chance that Flickr will drop Picnik as its default editor. After all, Flickr is owned by Yahoo!, one of Google’s main competitors.

What do you think of this acquisition? Google continuing to gain more power on the web? Leave your thoughts in the comments.
